Description
Pair of cuffs made by reclaiming cotton lace from a linen towel belonging to a family trousseau. A textile originally intended for bodily care is transformed into a wearable minimal mobile territory, taking on the function of an everyday talisman.
Each cuff is hand-embroidered with one of the final lines from Invictus by William Ernest Henley: “io sono il padrone del mio destino” (I am the master of my fate) and “io sono il capitano della mia anima” (I am the captain of my soul). The two statements become complete when the hands enter into relation, accompanying movement and action.
Written in 1875, Invictus is a hymn to resilience and self-determination. The poem affirms the existence of an inviolable inner space within the individual — a threshold no external condition can conquer. The embroidered words become a quiet formula of autonomy, repeated through gesture.
When worn, the cuffs act as discreet signs of personal strength. Objects born from a fragile domestic context assume a symbolic function: safeguarding inner resolve and recalling that the deepest form of freedom lies in sovereignty over oneself.
